Review by Adam Ray
The planet hopping adventure jumps again. This series has been able to change genre and story style with ease. We’ve had pulp noir on the prison planet and a psychological thriller in a haunted house. Now we’re seeing the wild west in space! This title must be so fun for Tomasi to dream up. Planet hopping – without the cosmic stakes of Justice League Odyssey – really lets a writer flex their muscles in a space to talk about… space…
Jonah Hex, a man out of time; a man blown up and rebuilt more times than an optimized gaming PC, has returned. A perfect vision of the character, Tomasi has written in a way to keep him so duty-bound, despite his experiences, perfectly. The sons and their new Lantern ally really warm to him, which is handled gradually through the issue and done in a very clear, realistic way.
Cutting away with a caption to explain a jump in time helpfully sells that jump. The dynamic shot of riders going towards the audience is classic in Wild West movies. The rushing wind and mixed expressions of the riders makes the shot really pop. I am wondering why what look like horses from Earth are on a distant planet. They could have been green or had three eyes. Then again, that vision is iconic.

Conclusion

The wild west planet, with Superboy wearing a stetson and picking up Jonah Hex’s access, riding along with the good, the bad, and the sons is the height of fun this title is known for. The journey across worlds continues and this issue sets the tone for just how fun the conclusion will be.
